Silenced: Women's Voices
INSPIRED BY REBECCA SOLNIT'S ESSAY,
"A Short History of Silence," Kelly McMichael wanted to bring the essay to life by visually representing the ways in which women are silenced in society and explore how being voiceless is central to women's history.
Using the model of "craft as activism--craftivism," McMichael will be partnering with institutions to hold a series of stitch-ins to make physical this idea of female silence thatpervades women's lives across the world.
The first sit-and-stitch is scheduled for June 27th, with more following. The goal is to collect these masks of silence into a touring exhibition that will feature women's stories, alongside quotes from Solnit's essay.
