INSPIRED BY REBECCA SOLNIT'S ESSAY,

"A Short History of Silence," I wanted to bring the essay to life by visually representing the ways in which women are silenced in society and explore how being voiceless is central to women's history.

Using the model of "craft as activism--craftivism," McMichael held a series of stitch-ins to make physical this idea of female silence that pervades women's lives across the world.

The first sit-and-stitch occurred  June 27, 2017, with more following.  The goal is to collect these masks of silence into a touring exhibition that will feature women's stories, alongside quotes from Solnit's essay.
